Mat removal is $1.50 a minute; hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner cost nothing extra.

The Urban Hound opened in the South End in 2000 as a dog care company, and its spa grooms nearly every breed, with doodles the most common. It now grooms cats as well.

The groomers flag any change they notice in a dog's coat or skin, and will never shave a matted dog without talking to the owner and getting written permission first; owners can instead collect the dog without a groom.

Senior dogs get comfort grooms that put ease ahead of looks. Dogs with serious health conditions, or who cannot stand, are referred to groomers at veterinary hospitals, since the spa has no vet on site.
