How to trim a cat's nails at home, even one that hates it
To trim a cat's nails, hold a paw, press gently on the top and bottom of the toe so the claw slides out, and cut off only the sharp, clear tip, staying in front of the pink quick inside. Most cats put up with a few claws at a time far better than all of them at once. A nail trim for a cat at a grooming salon costs a median of $20, and the middle half charge $18 to $30, from the menus of 175 salons on PawsRx (October 2026). 638 of the 3,718 salons PawsRx lists say on their own websites that they groom cats (October 2026).
How often to trim a cat's nails
Many indoor cats need a trim every few weeks. Check the claws every couple of weeks: if they catch on carpet and furniture, or you can hear them on a hard floor, they are due. Older cats often need trims more often, because they scratch less and their claws can grow thick and curl round toward the pad. A claw growing into the pad is a reason to see a veterinarian.
What you need
Small clippers made for cats are the easiest to control. A sturdy scratching post does part of the job between trims, because scratching sheds the worn outer layers of the claw. Have a clean cloth within reach in case you nick the quick.

Cat nail clippers
A cat's claws retract, so you press the toe pad gently to bring the claw out before you trim the tip.

How to trim a cat's nails, step by step
- Choose a sleepy, relaxed moment, not straight after play.
- Sit with your cat on your lap facing away from you, or wrapped loosely in a towel with one paw out.
- Hold a paw and press gently on the pad and the top of the toe so the claw extends.
- Find the quick, the pink part inside the claw. Cut only the clear, curved tip, a little in front of it.
- Cut quickly and cleanly, then let go. Do a few claws, give a treat, and stop.
- Remember the dewclaw on the inside of each front leg.
- Back claws usually need less taken off, and less often.
If your cat hates it, or you are doing it alone
- Do one or two claws a day instead of all of them at once.
- On days you are not trimming, handle the paws gently when your cat is relaxed, and give a treat.
- A towel snug around the body with one paw out at a time keeps many cats calmer and keeps your arms out of reach.
- On your own, sit with the cat on your lap facing away from you, held gently against you with one arm, and trim with the other hand.
- If your cat bites, scratches hard or panics, stop. A groomer who does cats or a veterinary practice can do it. Sedation is a decision for a veterinarian.
If you cut the quick
Press a clean cloth gently on the end of the claw until it stops bleeding. If it has not stopped after several minutes of steady pressure, or the claw is torn rather than cut, call a veterinarian.
Nail caps
Nail caps are soft covers glued over trimmed claws, used by some owners to protect furniture. They come off as the claw grows and need replacing. Trimming still comes first, because a cap goes over a trimmed claw.
