Good to know

Harlem Doggie Day Spa opened in 2010 as a grooming shop and later added daycare and cage-free boarding. Groomers do breed-specific cuts, and dogs with special needs, older dogs or dogs with an illness get extra time when the front desk knows ahead.

Grooming is by appointment, with walk-ins taken when there is room. A groom usually takes two to three hours. Matted dogs are shaved rather than brushed out, since brushing out mats hurts; a matting fee is extra.

One groomer does cats, on quieter days when fewer dogs are in. Puppies can start from eight weeks after their second round of shots, with a short first visit.

Rabies, distemper-parvo and Bordetella vaccines are required. Owners do not stay during the groom.
