Veterinarians in New York, NY

Out of hours. 9 of the 89 New York practices whose website we have read describe urgent or emergency work. They are listed together on the New York urgent care page. That is what a practice says about itself, not a promise it is open now, so phone before you drive.

Weekends. 48 of the 66 that publish opening hours name a Saturday or Sunday time. The rest publish weekday hours only.

Who owns them. 8 of the 118 listings in New York are branches of national groups, about 7%; the other 110 trade under their own name. Neither is better on its own, but it changes what to ask: a group branch is more likely to have standard pricing and a phone queue, an independent more likely to have the same veterinarian see your animal each visit. Chain locations are listed together on the chains pages.

Beyond dogs and cats. 59 New York practices tell us which other animals they treat. 1 sees rabbits, 6 see birds, 4 see reptiles, 2 see small mammals, 2 see ferrets, 1 sees amphibians and 4 see other exotics.

What is missing. None of those 59 mentions fish, horses. Practices that see these animals are uncommon everywhere and worth travelling for, so it is worth widening the search rather than assuming the nearest clinic will take one: fish vets nationwide, horse vets nationwide.
