Hair loss that starts at the tail is the ferret thing everyone misses

Ferrets shed, so people write it off. But there's a pattern worth knowing: adrenal disease in ferrets usually starts with hair thinning at the tail and rump and works forward along the back. It tends to be symmetrical, it doesn't necessarily itch at first, and it shows up most in middle aged ferrets. Other signs that travel with it: a spayed female with a swollen vulva, which shouldn't be happening at all since she has no ovaries. Males getting aggressive or humping again. Itchiness. And in males, straining to urinate. That last one is the emergency. Adrenal disease can enlarge prostatic tissue enough to obstruct the urethra, and a ferret who can't pee is a today problem, not a wait and see problem. Good news is it's treatable. The common option now is a deslorelin implant (Suprelorin F), a small once yearly implant that suppresses the hormone overproduction driving all of it. The published work in the veterinary journals has vulvar swelling, itching and the behavior changes dropping off within about two weeks, hair regrowing over the following month or so, and a mean of roughly 13 months before signs come back. Surgery is still on the table depending on the ferret and which gland is involved. Honestly the hard part isn't the treatment, it's finding someone who sees ferrets at all. Most small animal clinics don't. If that's you, sort it out before you need it. Search the directory for exotics, call and confirm they actually take ferrets, put the number in your phone. You do not want to be googling this at 9pm with a ferret who can't urinate.
