Veterinarians in San Mateo, CA

Out of hours. 5 of the 13 San Mateo practices whose website we have read describe urgent or emergency work. They are listed together on the San Mateo urgent care page. That is what a practice says about itself, not a promise it is open now, so phone before you drive.

Weekends. 5 of the 7 that publish opening hours name a Saturday or Sunday time. The rest publish weekday hours only.

Who owns them. 3 of the 17 listings in San Mateo are branches of national groups, about 18%; the other 14 trade under their own name. Neither is better on its own, but it changes what to ask: a group branch is more likely to have standard pricing and a phone queue, an independent more likely to have the same veterinarian see your animal each visit. Chain locations are listed together on the chains pages.

Beyond dogs and cats. 11 San Mateo practices tell us which other animals they treat. 1 sees rabbits and 1 sees small mammals.

What is missing. None of those 11 mentions birds, reptiles, ferrets, amphibians, fish, horses, other exotics. Practices that see these animals are uncommon everywhere and worth travelling for, so it is worth widening the search rather than assuming the nearest clinic will take one: bird vets nationwide, reptile vets nationwide, ferret vets nationwide.
