Barkley Square has groomed pets in the Washington, DC area since 1991, when Kristina Robertson founded it as Karing by Kristina. The groomers are affiliated with the National Dog Groomers Association of America and the National Cat Groomers Institute. The spa aims to be cage-free, and staff speak Spanish.

The spa does not express anal glands or pluck ear hair unless a veterinarian has recommended it.

If fleas are found, the pet is sent to a veterinarian before grooming, and the full groom price plus a $25 flea sanitation charge applies. Pets picked up more than 15 minutes after they are ready are charged a boarding fee.
