Janice Kushma opened Precious Pets in Sewickley in 1985 and it has grown to a team of four groomers. They keep it old school, hand-scissoring rather than shaving and never using hot dryers or leaving a dog alone on a table, and rarely book more than six appointments a day.

Your pet stays with the same groomer for life. You can schedule an appointment or bring your pet by first to meet the team and get a closer estimate. Bring or email vaccination records before the first visit.

Most appointments take 3 to 4 hours, up to 5 for larger breeds; you get a text 30 minutes before your pet is ready, and you leave with the next visit booked. Payment is cash or check. Grooming every 5 to 7 weeks is recommended, or every two months for short-haired and bath-only dogs.
