My cat has thrown up 5 times in the matter of 15 hours

My cat has thrown up 5 times in the matter of 15 hours. There isn't any blood and he seems to be acting normal. It seems he is mainly throwing up his food. He doesn't mind eating again but every time he has eaten, he has thrown up at some point. I want to know if this is urgent enough to go to a vet in person.

Want a licensed vet to look at this too? We will put it in front of the vets who answer here, and post their reply on this thread.

I’m glad to hear that he is still acting normally and interested in eating, and the fact that you haven’t seen any blood is reassuring. However, vomiting five times within about 15 hours is more than I would recommend monitoring at home, particularly since he has vomited again each time he has eaten. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and having him evaluated today. Cats can sometimes continue to act fairly normal even when something is going on, and repeated vomiting can lead to dehydration. Your veterinarian will also want to rule out things such as gastrointestinal irritation, a foreign body or obstruction, pancreatitis, or another underlying cause. Given the frequency of his vomiting and me not knowing the age or more of his history, I would not wait another full day to see whether it resolves on its own. Hope this helps and he is on the mend quickly. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at any time.

I would like to clarify, I am not a veterinarian; I am a veterinary professional, so I can provide you will some general information and help with pointing you in the right direction. I cannot diagnose your cat or recommend a specific treatment. 5 episodes of vomiting in about 15 hours, and he is vomiting after eating, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian today and having him evaluated sooner rather than later. Even though he may still be acting normally, repeated vomiting can lead to conditions that need prompt attention. In my experience, vomiting is almost always a symptom of an underlying issue. Here is a list of some underlying issues to cause vomiting: • Gastroenteritis/stomach irritation – inflammation or irritation of the GI tract can cause repeated vomiting. • Dietary indiscretion or food intolerance – eating something unusual or something that doesn't agree with him. • Hairballs – can cause vomiting, although repeated vomiting shouldn't automatically be attributed to hairballs. • Parasites or GI infection – can cause vomiting with or without diarrhea. • Inflammatory bowel disease – inflammation within the GI tract can result in recurring vomiting. • Foreign material/intestinal obstruction – things such as string, ribbon, plastic, hair ties, or pieces of toys can cause significant GI problems and may become an emergency. • Pancreatic or other abdominal disease – problems involving other abdominal organs can sometimes initially present as vomiting. Seek Emergency Care if he continues to vomit and exhibit other signs that are out of the ordinary. I hope he is better soon. We are here if you have more questions. We hope your cat feels better soon.

Not a cat owner myself, but I dug into this one and the consistent answer from vet sources is: yes, this is worth a visit, and sooner rather than later. The part that stands out isn't the 5 times, it's that he can't keep any meal down. A cat who vomits once or twice and then holds food down is usually fine to watch at home. A cat who throws up after every single meal for 15 hours has crossed into "get him checked" territory, even if he's acting normal. If it does turn out to be something simple like hairballs or eating too fast, the vet visit is cheap peace of mind. Hope he's okay!
