Yesterday my dog had think dark brown vaginal discharge

Yesterday my dog had think dark brown vaginal discharge. It happened within a small timeframe, it was not consistently happening all day. It happened once, then not again. She was just in her heat cycle, and the last time I saw "normal" heat cycle related discharge was probably a week or week and a half ago, and that heat cycle to my best estimate started around the 20th of September. Maybe a bit before that? Her behavior is completely normal. Eating, drinking, playing, etc. She had soft stool yesterday, not full on diarrhea but softer than normal. Gums look normal and doesn't seem to be in pain (running around, jumping on high bed, sleeping on back). I monitored since last not and have not noticed any additional discharge. The discharge that did come out, I should add, was completely odorless and she does not have any smell coming from her.

A licensed veterinarian’s answer

Hello, I'm sorry to see you're concerned. Are you actively trying to breed her? Does she have access to other intact dogs? I am concerned with the time frame after her last heat cycle. I would think it's not a bad idea to get her an appointment to make sure a pyometra is not developing.

She is the only dog. No access to any other dogs. Never been bred nor any attempts to. She was just outside a few minutes ago and passed normal stool. She then ran around the yard for a while playing and chasing squirrels. The reason I made this post was because I wanted to see if it looked like Pyometra discharge, or if it was more aligned to old reproductive cycle remnants being expelled since its dark brown and coagulated like.

If the bill is the part that's hard

Ask the practice first: many will split a bill in-house, and it costs nothing to ask. If not, these are the two plans most pet owners use.

  • Scratchpay. A payment plan for vet bills you apply for in about a minute, used at the practices that take it.
  • CareCredit. A card for health and vet costs that most practices accept.

PawsRx may be paid when you apply. Approval and terms are the lender's, we never see your application, and we don't choose one for you.
