Thyroid Conditions
Precise thyroid care, without the pill fights.
Vet consultation, compounded medication, and free shipping included. Cancel anytime.
Thyroid disease is extremely common — hyperthyroidism in older cats, hypothyroidism in middle-aged dogs. Both are lifelong conditions requiring daily medication at precise doses, and both are notoriously hard to manage when your cat spits out every pill or your dog's dose falls between commercial tablet strengths.
This is where compounding shines. A methimazole transdermal gel rubbed inside a cat's ear replaces the twice-daily pill battle entirely. PawsRx connects you with an independent licensed veterinarian who can prescribe the right form at the right dose, shipped to your door monthly.
Signs to look for
- Cats: weight loss despite ravenous appetite
- Cats: increased thirst, restlessness, unkempt coat
- Cats: vomiting or racing heart rate
- Dogs: unexplained weight gain and lethargy
- Dogs: thinning coat, cold intolerance, recurring skin issues
- Any pet: gradual behavior changes in middle to senior age
This list is informational only and is not a diagnosis. Only a licensed veterinarian can evaluate your pet.
How treatment works
For cats with hyperthyroidism, the veterinarian may prescribe compounded methimazole as a transdermal gel or flavored liquid. For dogs with hypothyroidism, compounded levothyroxine can be dosed precisely to weight. Thyroid management requires periodic lab monitoring, which your vet will discuss — existing lab results from your regular vet can be shared during intake.
A prescription is not guaranteed. All prescribing decisions are made solely by an independent licensed veterinarian based on their clinical judgment. If the veterinarian determines your pet is not a candidate for telehealth treatment, you will not be charged. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

Common questions
My cat was already diagnosed by our regular vet. Can PawsRx just handle the medication?
Yes — this is one of our most common cases. Share the diagnosis and any recent lab work during intake, complete a video consultation so the PawsRx veterinarian can establish a valid relationship with your pet, and they can take over ongoing prescription management if appropriate.
What is transdermal methimazole?
It's methimazole compounded into a gel you rub on the hairless skin inside your cat's ear. It absorbs through the skin, replacing oral pills entirely. For pill-averse cats, it's life-changing for everyone involved.
Does my pet still need blood tests?
Yes. Thyroid conditions require periodic lab monitoring to keep dosing safe and effective. The veterinarian will tell you how often, and results from any local clinic or lab can be uploaded to your PawsRx dashboard.
