Chronic skin conditions — recurring infections, seborrhea, fungal issues, immune-related dermatitis — are frustrating precisely because they keep coming back. Commercial products come in one-size-fits-all strengths, and what works for a 90-pound Shepherd isn't right for a 9-pound terrier.
Compounded dermatology is one of the strongest arguments for custom medication: the independent licensed veterinarian can prescribe topical formulations at concentrations chosen for your pet's specific condition, combined into a single application instead of three separate products.
Signs to look for
- Recurring skin infections that return after antibiotics end
- Greasy, flaky, or foul-smelling coat
- Thickened, darkened skin from chronic irritation
- Persistent hot spots or moist dermatitis
- Crusting or scabbing around the ears, face, or paws
- Chronic paw licking with red-brown fur staining
This list is informational only and is not a diagnosis. Only a licensed veterinarian can evaluate your pet.
How treatment works
The veterinarian may prescribe compounded ketoconazole, mupirocin, or a custom multi-ingredient topical formulated for your pet's specific presentation. Because compounded topicals are made to order, concentration and vehicle (spray, mousse, ointment) can match the affected area and your pet's coat type.
A prescription is not guaranteed. All prescribing decisions are made solely by an independent licensed veterinarian based on their clinical judgment. If the veterinarian determines your pet is not a candidate for telehealth treatment, you will not be charged. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

Common questions
Do I need to send photos of my pet's skin?
Photos help a lot. You can describe the condition in your intake and show the affected areas live on the video consultation. Clear photos of the skin up close give the veterinarian the best view alongside the video call.
What if my pet needs a skin culture or scraping first?
Some conditions do require in-person diagnostics. If the veterinarian believes a culture, scraping, or biopsy is needed before treating, they'll recommend it and you won't be charged for the consultation.
Can PawsRx treat both the skin issue and the underlying allergy?
Often chronic skin problems are allergy-driven. The Two Conditions plan ($65/mo) covers both, and the same veterinarian manages the full picture.
