Few things are more frightening than watching your pet have a seizure. For pets diagnosed with epilepsy, daily anticonvulsant medication at a precise, never-missed dose is the foundation of management — and missed refills are one of the most common causes of breakthrough seizures.
PawsRx supports ongoing management for diagnosed pets: an independent licensed veterinarian reviews your pet's diagnosis and history, and can prescribe compounded non-controlled anticonvulsants at exact doses with automatic monthly delivery, so refill day never becomes seizure day.
Signs to look for
- A prior epilepsy or seizure disorder diagnosis from a veterinarian
- Episodes of collapse, paddling, or convulsions
- Brief episodes of staring, twitching, or 'fly-biting'
- Disorientation or temporary blindness after episodes
- Breakthrough seizures when doses are missed
- Difficulty giving current seizure pills consistently
This list is informational only and is not a diagnosis. Only a licensed veterinarian can evaluate your pet.
How treatment works
For diagnosed pets, the veterinarian may prescribe compounded levetiracetam, zonisamide, or potassium bromide — all non-controlled anticonvulsants — at doses matched exactly to your pet's weight and current protocol. PawsRx does not prescribe phenobarbital or other controlled substances. A first-time or undiagnosed seizure requires in-person veterinary evaluation.
A prescription is not guaranteed. All prescribing decisions are made solely by an independent licensed veterinarian based on their clinical judgment. If the veterinarian determines your pet is not a candidate for telehealth treatment, you will not be charged. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

Common questions
My pet just had their first seizure. Can PawsRx help?
Not yet — a first seizure needs an in-person workup to rule out causes like toxins, metabolic disease, or structural problems. Once your pet has a diagnosis and management plan, PawsRx can help maintain it affordably.
Why doesn't PawsRx prescribe phenobarbital?
Phenobarbital is a controlled substance, and PawsRx veterinarians do not prescribe controlled substances of any kind. Effective non-controlled options like levetiracetam and zonisamide are widely used in veterinary epilepsy management, and your veterinarian will determine what's appropriate.
How important is dose precision for seizure meds?
Very — anticonvulsants work by maintaining steady blood levels. Compounding allows exact weight-based dosing instead of rounding to the nearest commercial tablet size, and consistent monthly delivery protects against missed doses.
