Ear Infections

Break the cycle of recurring ear infections.

Vet consultation, compounded medication, and free shipping included. Cancel anytime.

If your dog shakes their head every few weeks and you've lost count of the ear infection visits, you know the cycle: exam, cleaning, ointment, temporary relief, repeat. Chronic otitis is one of the most common — and most expensive — recurring problems in dogs, especially floppy-eared and allergy-prone breeds.

PawsRx addresses the ongoing management side: an independent licensed veterinarian evaluates your pet's history and current state by video, and can prescribe compounded otic medications and maintenance flushes matched to your pet's specific pattern of infections.

Signs to look for

  • Frequent head shaking or ear scratching
  • Dark discharge or strong odor from the ears
  • Red, swollen, or painful ear canals
  • Whining or pulling away when ears are touched
  • Crusting or hair loss around the ear
  • Infections that return within weeks of finishing treatment

This list is informational only and is not a diagnosis. Only a licensed veterinarian can evaluate your pet.

How treatment works

The veterinarian may prescribe a custom otic suspension targeting the type of infection your pet typically develops, along with a TrizEDTA-based maintenance flush to prevent recurrence between flare-ups. Chronic ear disease is often allergy-linked, and the vet can address both together.

A prescription is not guaranteed. All prescribing decisions are made solely by an independent licensed veterinarian based on their clinical judgment. If the veterinarian determines your pet is not a candidate for telehealth treatment, you will not be charged. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

Common questions

Can a vet see enough of the ear over video?

For pets with an established pattern of recurring infections, video plus your history is often sufficient for ongoing management. First-time or severe cases — significant pain, suspected ruptured eardrum, foreign bodies — need an in-person exam, and the veterinarian will tell you if that's the case.

What's a maintenance ear flush and why does it matter?

Recurring infections usually mean the ear environment stays hospitable to yeast and bacteria between episodes. A prescription maintenance flush used weekly changes that environment, which is how you break the infection cycle instead of just treating each flare.

My dog's infections are allergy-related. Can you treat both?

Yes — this combination is common. The Two Conditions plan covers allergy medication plus otic treatment, managed together by the same veterinarian.
