Digestive & GI Issues

Chronic digestive problems — recurring vomiting, acid reflux, motility issues, sensitive stomachs — grind down pets and their families alike. The 5 a.m. vomit cleanup becomes routine, and every food change brings hope and then disappointment.

For pets with ongoing GI conditions, PawsRx offers a manageable path: an independent licensed veterinarian reviews the full history, and where appropriate prescribes compounded GI medications in forms a nauseated pet will actually accept — often a critical detail, since pills are hardest to give to a pet that doesn't want to eat.

Signs to look for

  • Recurring vomiting or early-morning bile vomiting
  • Chronic soft stool or intermittent diarrhea
  • Lip-licking, gulping, or grass-eating (nausea signs)
  • Poor appetite or picky eating that comes and goes
  • Weight loss despite normal eating
  • Gurgling stomach sounds with visible discomfort

This list is informational only and is not a diagnosis. Only a licensed veterinarian can evaluate your pet.

How treatment works

Depending on the diagnosis, the veterinarian may prescribe compounded omeprazole for acid-related conditions, metoclopramide for motility issues, ondansetron for nausea, or sucralfate for ulcer protection — in liquid or transdermal forms suited to pets who resist pills. Sudden severe vomiting, suspected obstruction, or a bloated, distressed dog is an emergency requiring immediate in-person care.

A prescription is not guaranteed. All prescribing decisions are made solely by an independent licensed veterinarian based on their clinical judgment. If the veterinarian determines your pet is not a candidate for telehealth treatment, you will not be charged. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

Common questions

When are digestive symptoms an emergency?

Repeated unproductive retching in a large dog (possible bloat), suspected swallowed objects, vomiting with lethargy or blood, or a pet who can't keep water down — these need an emergency clinic immediately, not telehealth. PawsRx is for chronic, diagnosed, or ongoing management.

Will the vet consider diet as well as medication?

Yes. Chronic GI cases are often managed with diet and medication together, and the veterinarian will discuss both honestly — including when a diet trial matters more than a prescription.

My cat won't take pills, especially when nauseated. What are the options?

This is exactly what compounding solves. Anti-nausea and acid-reducing medications can be prepared as flavored liquids or, for some drugs, transdermal gels applied to the ear — no pilling required.
